Dog Walker Diaries - From Long Beach to Vancouver

Although I usually pet sit in Long Beach, California, I recently spent a week and a half in Vancouver, Canada. This wasn’t my first time traveling north for pet sitting, and I’m always amazed that I can explore beautiful places while doing what I love. This trip was especially stunning, with gentle winds, deep blue skies, and leaves in vibrant reds and oranges that showcased the beauty of fall.

How did I end up in Vancouver? In short, I was hired to pet sit a dog and five cats for a veterinarian in Huntington Beach. I prefer to call my clients "partners" because mutual trust is essential for providing quality care. Over the years, my relationship with this vet deepened, and when she moved to Vancouver, she asked for my help. Can you imagine driving the coast from Southern California with two people, five cats, and a dog? That's exactly what we did, and we had an incredible time—so much so that she keeps asking me to come back!

And back I was, ready to embrace the loving yet chaotic situations that arise with so many animals in one house.

I am in no way excusing myself from being a part of the circus - I’ve learned that animals are sensitive to energy, so how I show up matters. These pets require a lot of attention, and the house needs thorough cleaning nearly every day. It takes constant patience and self-compassion to stay relaxed enough to engage in a fun and lively way. In my next blog post, I’ll detail our daily schedule, share what a day in the life of a traveling pet sitter looks like, and tell the story of a dog who thinks he’s a cat.

Spoiler alert - I'm not entirely convinced he's a dog.
