What Cats Have Taught Me About Stopping Busy-Work

Writer: rachel stokesrachel stokes

As I spent the last week cat sitting in Long Beach, I found myself reflecting on my obsessive and relentless pursuit of productivity. While my feline friends lounged around, soaking in the sun, I was struck by how much anxiety I felt at the thought of just being. Have I allowed capitalist culture ideas of productivity decide my worth? Cats have this innate ability to remind us of what truly matters, and through their simple, contented existence, they've taught me a valuable lesson: it's time to stop creating busy-work and know that I'm enough just existing.

The Illusion of Productivity

In today's fast-paced world, we often equate our worth with our productivity. We fill our days with tasks—many of them unnecessary or overly complicated—believing that the more we do, the more valuable we are.

During my time with the kitties, I noticed how they prioritize their well-being. Instead of rushing through a checklist, they take breaks, pause for stretches, and lounge in sunbeams. They embody the idea that productivity should not come at the expense of joy and relaxation. Imagine how much better our lives could be if we took a lesson from our furry companions.

Rethinking Our To-Do Lists

Many people carry around extensive to-do lists, often filled with trivial tasks that keep them busy but don’t really move them forward. This busy-work can create anxiety and self-doubt. But busy-work can sap our motivation, cut us off from inspiration and lead to burnout.

To combat this cycle, it’s essential to reevaluate our lists. Ask yourself:

  • What are my values?

  • Do my decisions align with those values?

  • If there is something that needs to get done, can the task(s) be delegated?

While cat sitting, I routinely chose to remain aware of any sensations of resistance to the moment in my body, and instead focused on these questions. I realized that by using my values as a guide, the next task I chose to do brought me a sense of being grounded no matter what - especially if my choice was to do nothing at all.

Finding Balance Through Mindfulness

Cats are the ultimate zen masters, often embodying mindfulness; they live in the moment and seem to take delight in the smallest of pleasures—whether chasing a speck of dust or lounging in a warm spot.

Incorporating mindfulness into our daily routines can alter how we engaging with life. I found that taking short moments to breathe, going outside to look at the clouds, and giving myself permission to simply exist transformed my approach to the day. I realized that there just isn't a lot going in between more memorable moments, and therefore, I didn't need clutter my mind and fill my time with thoughts. Mindfulness allows us to step back from the chaos of busy-work of our inner and outer environment, enabling us to focus on what matters most. You can practice this through activities like:

  • Deep breathing exercises

  • Contemplating your values

  • Short walks in nature

  • Being with your body without trying to change anything

Making even small changes to your daily habits can help you regain balance, much like how my feline friends approach each day.

The Power of Rest

Our four-legged companions excel at one thing: resting. Cats can sleep anywhere from 12 to 16 hours a day, demonstrating that rest is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. Many people (including myself), however, either feel guilty about taking breaks or simply push through their fatigue, leading to decreased inspiration and connection to life, and increased anxiety.

Creating the life you want is all about your energy and energy management. To better focus your intentions and manage your energy, consider implementing regular breaks and prioritizing good sleep hygiene. Here are some tips:

  • Set designated break times

  • Create a sleep-friendly environment

  • Practice winding down before bedtime (in a way that doesn't involve social media)

By prioritizing rest, we can improve our focus and creativity, ultimately reducing the need for busy-work in our lives.

Embracing Playfulness

Cats also embrace playfulness with abandon, whether it’s through pouncing on a toy or engaging in a spontaneous sprint. This reminds us that things that seem mundane don't have to be monotonous. Playfulness is actually a key component in creating the lives we want.

Incorporating playful elements into your daily routine can invigorate your tasks. Try:

  • Pretending like you're your favorite character all day long

  • Taking breaks to engage in fun activities (a quick game, a dance break)

  • Arranging your workspace to foster creativity and whatever inspires you

Engaging in playful activities can help you think outside the box and find joy in your work, moving you away from mindless busy-work.

A Different Approach to Fulfillment

As I reflect on the time spent with my feline charges in Long Beach, I truly appreciate the wisdom they impart through their natural behaviors. They understand that life is not about constant activity but about embracing each moment to its fullest.

It's vital to ask ourselves, “Am I enough?” The next time you feel overwhelmed by your to-do list, consider whether you’re just creating busy-work. Are the tasks fulfilling? Are they essential?

By focusing on our well-being, adopting mindfulness, prioritizing rest, and being playful, we can create a life that is rich in fulfillment rather than one cluttered with unnecessary tasks.

Remember, life is about quality, not quantity. So, take a lesson from our furry friends: it’s perfectly okay—and even essential—to stop creating busy-work and start enjoying the stillness and silence in between bigger moments.

With this shift in perspective, we can reduce anxiety, enjoy our lives more fully, and ultimately feel like we’re enough.

A Pawsitive Change

As my cat-sitting experience concludes, I'm thankful for the insight these cats have shared. Breaking free from busy-work has opened my mind to new possibilities, underscoring that life is more fulfilling when we prioritize being over doing.

Let’s choose to embrace the wisdom of our furry friends and stop creating unnecessary busy-work. It’s time to curl up, relax, and relish our days.
